The department is recognized as one of the premier departments around the country in soil and environmental sciences. The internationally prominent faculty are supported by excellent research facilities and contribute significantly to the scientific literature on soil and water resources sciences and climatology. The department's credibility is attested by the high level of research grants generated by the faculty. In addition, a large number of the faculty are on editorial boards or serve as editors of prominent scholarly journals. View awards won by department members.

Our goal is to develop and disseminate knowledge on the physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes taking place in the natural environment, and to apply this knowledge base to fulfill the potential of soil and water resources for producing food to sustain life, to preserve the quality of the environment, and to solve environmental problems.

The education, research, and extension programs in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate have a three-fold mission:

  • to improve agricultural productivity;
  • to wisely manage the soil resources; and
  • to maintain environmental quality.

To carry out our mission, five academic specializations in Soil Science (physics, chemistry and fertility, microbiology, genesis and classification, and agricultural climatology) have formed multidisciplinary teams to work in subject areas with the following program emphases:

  • Soil, water, atmospheric resources: their analysis, integration, use, and associated information delivery systems.
  • Soil physical management and conservation of soil and water resources.
  • Management of agricultural chemicals and pollutants for water quality maintenance and crop production.
  • Plant nutrient management for crop production and environmental protection.
  • Soil, water, and climatology research and education that benefit both international and Minnesota agriculture.
