For centuries Europe has been the heart of the world. European empires spanned the globe and transformed lives near and far. How and why was this possible? Globally, Europe's relative location at the heart of the land hemisphere is one of maximum efficiency for contact with the rest of the world. No where in Europe is more than three hundred miles from the sea. No place in Europe is very far from any other place on the continent. These geographic advantages enabled Europe to develop, as no other area has been able to do.
Western Europe is composed of eighteen countries. These include the large countries of Germany and France; the low countries of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg; the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland; the British Isles which include Ireland and the United Kingdom; Norden or Northern Europe which is comprised of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland, and Mediterranean Europe which consists of Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. This area is a mosaic of landforms, climates, cultures, traditions, and history. From the rugged peaks of the Scandinavian peninsula to the flat vineyards of Spain, Western Europe is a jigsaw puzzle of many, varied pieces. From:Western_Europe_WebQuest.
