Smectite Imagery

TEM image of smectite

Smectite observed by transmission electron microscopy. Smectites are visible both perpendicular to the C axis as the dark "blob" with irregular margins in the center of the image, and parallel to the C axis as the curving layers observed in the upper left portion of the image.

Extreme magnification - the curving lines present in the upper part of the image are individual smectite-illite layers approximately 24 Å thick; some faint 010 spacings can also be observed in the upper right portion of the flat-lying smectite - they are 4.5 Å apart. Micrograph by Ed Nater.
