The University of Minnesota distinguishes Departments from Graduate Programs. The faculty affiliated with the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate participates in several graduate programs such as Microbial Ecology, Applied Plant Sciences, Soil, and Water Resources.

This Web site describes the Graduate program in Soil. The Soil Program has two tracks of specialization: Soil and Climate. No reference is made on the M.S. or Ph.D. diploma of the graduate program. Transcripts mention the major (Soil Program with emphasis in Soil or Climate), and the minor.

Here is the listing of Graduate Fellowships/Assistantships.

Graduate Program in Soil

We believe the Graduate Program in Soil Science offers one of the best opportunities for graduate study in this field in the United States. The Department of Soil, Water, and Climate benefits from the traditions and facilities of a major metropolitan university and has more than 100 years of experience in graduate education. Many of our faculty have receive national and international recognition, and provide both challenging course work and research environments.
Policies and Procedures

The Ph.D. Degree Program

Students applying for admission to the Ph.D. program, either from another institution or from the University of Minnesota, must have completed a Masters degree with thesis (Plan A) or present documented evidence of the equivalency to a M.S. Plan A thesis.

The M.S. Degree Program

The M.S. degree is offered under both Plan A, involving a thesis and Plan B, which substitutes additional course work and special projects for the thesis. Both are based primarily on attainment of satisfactory proficiency in the broad fundamentals of Soil Science.

Minor in Soil

M.S. or Ph.D. degree candidates in other fields who wish to minor in Soil Science may do so with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies and under the direction of a member of the Graduate Faculty in Soil Science serving as the minor advisor.
