Climatology Minor (20 semester hours)
The climatology minor provides students with the opportunity to broaden
their expertise in the area of weather and climate studies. Students who
will be working for an industry or agency that depends on understanding
weather and climate change will find this minor useful.
Required Courses:
ES 1425 The Atmosphere (3)
ES 5211 Environmental Biophysics & Ecology(3)
Elective Courses:
Soil 5402 Biometeorology (3)
Geog 3401 Geography of Environmental Systems (3)
Geog 5423 Climate Models and Modeling (3)
Geog 5426 Climatic Variations (3)
EEB 5008 Forest Response to Quaternary Climate Change (2)
EEB 5009 Quaternary Vegetation History and Climate (2)
Soil Science Minor (20 Semester hours)
It is assumed that all students electing the minor in soils will have
completed Soil 2125 in their major requirements.
Required Courses:
ES 3221 Soil Conservation and Land-Use Management 3 cr.
SOIL 3416 Plant Nutrients in the Environment 3 cr.
ES 3612W Soil and Environmental Biology 3 cr
SOIL 5232 Vadose Zone Hydrology & Lab (3)
SOIL 4511 Field study of soils 2 cr.
SOIL 5515 Soil Genesis and Landscape Relations 3 cr.
Choose 3 credits from:
ES 4601 Soils and Pollution 3 cr.
SOIL 5555/ES 5555 Wetland Soils 3 cr.
ES 5211 Environmental Biophysics & Ecology 3 cr.
SOIL 5311 Soil Chemistry and Mineralogy 3 cr.
SOIL 5711 Forest Soils (2)
Water Science Minor (20 semester hours)
Students who are interested in qualifying as a hydrologist should determine
the exact requirements for the State of Minnesota civil service position
by checking the Hydrologist I (Hydrogeology) and Hydrologist I (Water
Resources) position descriptions. Students in Environmental Science in
the Water Resources Emphasis are not eligible for a Water Science Minor.
Required Courses:

FR 4114 Forest Hydrology and Watershed Management (3)
WRS 5001 Field Methods in Water Resources (3)
Soil 5232 Vadose Zone (3) or Soil 5555/ES 5555 Wetland Soils
(3)
Choose from:
EEB 4605 Limnology Lab (1)
NRES 3061 Water Quality: Management of a Natural Resource (3)
FR 5153 Forest and Wetland Hydrology ( 3)
EEB 4601 Limnology (3) or Geo 5701 General Hydrogeology (4)
